Printed text says this works off of life loss, Oracle text says this works off of damage. Quite a difference.

Yes, it's functionally different! It's from 4th Edition and on that this card was reworded... Don't know why.

Back around when they made 4e, they changed a few cards for balance reasons, or because they didn't feel the original text or mechanics reflected what the card was meant to do (Relic Bind was another example.)
Later, when they realized balance-errata was a terrible idea and undid most of them, they left in place any where the number of printed cards with the errataed text was greater than the number of printed cards without it, because they felt it could be confusing. I think that was lame, though, especially since most of the game's balance errata was just really really poorly-considered and weakened cards that were already barely-playable... as you can see here.
