If you play it early, you probably don't need it, unless you're up against a lot of super fast deal-exactly-20-damage decks. If you play it late you could have played a stronger spell. It's not exactly useless, but I can think of better choices even for a life gain deck. I would rather play a Wall of Hope than this thing if I were interested in a lot of life.

Well if you're up against a Storm deck designed to deal exactly 20 to you this can save your tookus long enough to make a comeback.
If you can kill four bogardan hellkites with two mana, though, you are a very lucky man. echoing Truth?
or against Tendrils, you will be up against 40 life.

Of all the 1 for 3 cost drops (Giant Growth,Time Walk, Lightning Bolt, & Dark Ritual) this is the absolute worst. Very underpowered compared to the others.

@4wallz: That's because two of the cards in that cycle are absolutely broken. I would say this is a decent card. It can gain you life if you need it and it can protect one of your creatures from burn. Decent.

on the card, its mildly useful, but I would never play it unless I had to :/
