does "If the player can't" mean the player whos upkeep phase it is or the owner of Woebringer? If it means the owner, why don't they just say "you"?

I love him in a Jund style Devour deck.
The opponent really doesn't want to lose creatures when you have threats on the board.

Makes me think of Drop of Honey/Porphyry Nodes. A much closer card I found is Magus of the Abyss, which is a *reprint* of The Abyss. Nowadays them youngsters are just getting actually efficient creatures instead of overpowered answers to stuff like Ironclaw Orcs...
