Each Time Spiral card was an homage to at least one previously printed card.
This card is referencing the clockwork creatures like Clockwork Beast as well as the tendency of hydras like Spitting Hydra and Molten Hydra to lose their heads in exchange for damage.

You do the damage when it is declared as an attacker - so it happens before blockers are declared and well before combat damage.

My friends always used 'poke' for attacking with a vigilant creature, cause you kinda move the card towards the guy, but don't tap it, then pull it back.
This guy is a solid mainstay of my 'cards I wish were better' pile. Such a sweet concept.

A 4/4 artifact creature for 5 mana is pretty good, definitely deserves a rating of at least 3.5

Needs vigilance, but its not to hard to make it good. Problem is it is not good in a vacuum.

Why does this not lose the +1/+1 counter at the end of the attack like the other clockworks? That makes it a lot worse than say a Clockwork Avian.

This also doesn't have the rules text saying it can't have more than its original number of counters. Definitely one of the better Clockwork-ers. I'd tap that.
