Enduring Renewal (also Ice Age Block) makes it a recurring Dark Banishing

Gotta love this guy. "Chump your dude, explode your other dude."

Without Enduring Renewal, He'll never be picked over Royal Assassin

More like a suicide bomber than an a s s a s s i n, I prefer royal a s s a s s i n over this, and they cost the same, royal doesn't die when he kills and can also take down black creatures. Killing them while they're tapped is more a s s a s s i n like too.

Cauldron of Souls works too.

Interestingly enough, he has a special version of recover, since he is the only creature with it, to avoid confusion (I suspect) it says "another creature" while all others say "a creature"

For those who doesn't want to pay the life, Grim Harvest is another option.

Also, Garza's Assassin is better than Royal Assassin in one regard; you can use his ability when he comes into play, Royal Assassin cannot due to summoning sickness.

With no drawbacks, either.

It also cant beat any black creature, any creature with shroud, any creature with protection from black, protection from creatures, protection from converted mana cost 3 or less. That said, it's still a pretty good card, and its Recover has also been pretty useful from time to time.
