Seems like it'd be excellent with Obsidian Fireheart. You could leave the mana open to demolish an overrun/overwhelm/etc style combat trick, or you can still put a blaze counter down (but miss out on the one extra damage that upkeep you could've done)

Even so, I'm giving it strong consideration for such use.

I love this card, because it hits a few spots that I needed to hit. The best part is that it often comes as a surprise.

Just before the overrun resolves, you might expect one of your elves being burned, but not all of them.
Your shrouded creature seems safe, and you might even be willing to block with him, thinking there's no way I can deal an extra 2 points of damage to them.
You'll let my humble resolve on your creature, because you think that you'll just counter the next spell I cast.
You've got a leyline of sanctity, so you don't think you have to worry about getting your face burned.

Sure, you burn yourself and any creatures you may have, but with creatures like spitemare, that might not be such a drawback.

@Arachibutyrophobia
You didn't play Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Standard did you? After that season, when Shards Block gave us this... oh I can't describe the feeling of watching a Fae Player see this hit the stack. In those first few weeks, you could almost see the light dim in their eyes as they read the card. This was (at the time) as MASSIVE improvement over Pyroclasm, just because of that first line. The slap to the face of a planeswalker was just gravy really.

Now this is a card great for constructed and limited alike for obvious reasons, but at current it seems like we got too many "mini-wraths," this one seems to further Wizards agenda to slow the game clock and fight those nasty little Fae (or atleast make them maximize their MD Thoughtseize count.) The art is likable and the design I suppose is fair enough all the while feeling a bit like instant is over the top. While some feel this is a replacement for Firespout, I have to make an argument for that extra point of damage and being able to "aim" it if needed.

However, this is a solid card and I look forward to seeing how Fae will work to dodge this card (because they will.) ;)

The card being instant is excellent. Having a the card uncounterable makes it feel like it needs to be instant. A uncounterable sorcery field sweep like this just would not feel right if it was not instant. It gives the feel of urgency, "I need to quickly cast this 2 damage field sweep and make sure it gets through even the strongest of counters."

Making it instant gives it all kinds of functions. Do you want to have 3 presumably Mountains open when you end your turn just in case your opponent swarms with a bunch of lower defense creatures so that you can toast them? Say they do not do it, then you have the versatility to throw a Flame Javelin now. The card gives a lot of options to the RDW player that they did not have before in the current Standard.

That is my view on this card. I love it, I main board four of them into my RDW deck, I find myself winning the same amount of matches and it really has not seemed to give me a vast edge on other decks but it does give me the comfort of... (see all)

Anyone who thinks this card should be a sorcery is retarded. Anyone who thinks Pyroclasm is better either doesn't like playing red, or is very short-sighted. Volcanic Fallout is the real deal people. This one is here to stay; watch out for reprints of this bad boy. 4.5/5

Pyroclasm vs Volcanic Fallout, Pros and cons.
Pyroclasm
Pros:
-Cheap Mana Cost
-Deals damage to ONLY creatures.

Cons:
-Deals damage to ONLY creatures.
-CAN be countered.

Volcanic Fallout
Pros:
-Deals damage to both creatures AND players.
-It's an instant, so it can be played ANYtime.
-Cannot be countered.

Cons:
-3 CMC
-Deals damage to you, but for a measly 2 damage.

Verdict???
Vol Fall, FTW!!

But why not put BOTH of these in your red deck??? Why be so greedy to not use one or the other???

@Dacen You do realize it doesn't hit planeswalkers and players. Planeswalkers are permanents, not players. So unless that damage is redirected to the walker then you're just going to hit the player.

@OneT Also you can target the spell with counter spells but they do nothing. Such as Countersquall wont counter it but the opponent will still lose the life.

White Blue PRO RED! WOOT!

MY sig
702.14e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

Volcanic fallout is the savior of Red Deck Win, and what i play, Blightning Aggro. The only card that is even better is banefire. I smashed Faeries the first three times i played em because of fallout and i never even got to use my Banfires. The biggest deal about this card is the 2 damage that can't be countered. When you play burn like i do the game is always determined by 1 or 2 life, now i have the answer. I'll use fallout with no creatures out if its late game and my opponnets bellow 5 life. Good luck Faeries your gonna need more than luck, your gonna need cards you don't have. LOL
