Homarid Spawning bed bait, itself another under-rated card from this set.

It's like an old version of simic sky swallower, as they are both 6/6 tramplers with shroud for blue decks. :)

Well, deep spawn got no flying and costs one more mana. But on the other hand, it doesn't require you to play green, you can target it with stuff if you want to (like to equip it or put some aura on it), and it's milling ability can be used to gain threshold or put stuff with unearth / flashback / retrace or incarnations in your graveyard. Not to mention pedantic learning or narcomoeba.

Sure, the skyswallower is still better. I'm just saying that the deep spawn ain't as horrible as some people claim and can make sense in some decks. Not to mention it won me a few drafts. :) And it got great art. :)

2.5 stars from me

Was fun in my reanimater deck day in the 90's, mill myself for 2 possible fatty's. Other than that he collected alot of dust.

In a way, this was the first Morphling, a big blue fatty capable of protecting itself.
Granted, its... not as aggressively costed.

You know, a creature like this was ahead of its time. The shroud, while somewhat sucky, can save it in a pinch. The self-milling is actually a boon in some decks, and if you're playing reanimation, you won't be playing the mana cost for this, ever.

That being said, there are better choices out there to reanimate.

@Radagast: The upkeep cost won't hurt you (and might even help you, in the right deck) unless it mills you completely to death. But if you can go that long with a 6/6 trampler without crushing your opponent, then you deserved to lose.

It's not the upkeep that makes this unusable, it's just plain the mana cost.

I love the fact that it's a giant lobster with some nice artwork from Mark Tedin. I hate the fact that it sucks so much :)

Deep Spawn serves one purpose and one purpose only: Sacrifice it to Spawning Bed to make 8 Camarid tokens. With Tidal Influence in play, this can be brutal.

If you got rid of its upkeep cost, it might be useful... maybe...
