WotC should have reprinted Savannah Lions instead of making this guy. In older formats and casual, it basicly allows you to have 8 of one card, and that's something that shouldn't be with such a power card.

Nasty. Eat your heart out, Goblin Piker

With the recent buffs to soldiers, this is a veeerrry good 1 drop.

4.5/5

Elite vanguard and vampire nighthawk totally remind me of each other. They are the definition of power creep in today's MTG. They are both part of two of the great tribes, and they both do just as well as each other in their environment.

@ sc*mbling1:

Discussing a card (or a trend of cards within a given time-frame) as evidence of Power Creep in the game is not discussing that card (or that trend of cards) in the context of a given block or T2 tournament only.

The point of talk about Power Creep is that later sets are distinctly and undeniably more powerful than cards from earlier sets.

If you were to take your cards from about the Onslaught/Invasion period up to the latest sets, and play against a person using only cards from before the Onslaught/Invasion period, the player with the new cards would win an overwhelming percentage of the time.

I've actually seen it happen. Two or three years ago, a friend of mine with some of the latest cards at the time played against me, while I was using cards that were almost entirely from around Ice Age through Tempest. I didn't stand a chance. No matter what deck of mine I played, there was basically no hope for me winning against his modern cards.

My point is not limi... (see all)

You can have a 2/1 for White, then, add Green, it gets +1/+2 and finally, add Red so it gets +2/+1. All uncommon vanilla creatures. All almost too good

5/5, clearly. However, I would prefer a 1/1 white soldier with first strike over this. In a white weenie meta full of buffs as easy as turn 2, the one extra power is not as amazing as it looks. However, first strike gives it the ability to not just trade with the opponent's 1 or 2 drop, but actually come out alive, ready to be buffed and fight for the cause. with the rhox pikemaster, first strike is a possibility, but that late in the game, these soldiers have been buffed so much that the first strike is a bit useless. Surprisingly enough, first strike is game changing in the first few turns, mediocre in mid game, then pivotal again at the end, where a double/triple block of a bomb by buffed first striking soldiers can destroy your opponent. nevertheless, best 1 drop for white weenie, hands down.

@ laguz

Sure, if you attacked with it when the opponent had a 1/1 blocker out it would die if they blocked.

But if they attack you with a 1/1 and you don't block your going to be dealing twice the damage they are. Also you have to take into account that soldiers are a very practical tribal type. Soldiers have a lot of synergy.

*cough*powercreep*cough*

EDIT: Savannah Lions was a rare with useless creature type. This is an uncommon Soldier. If this ain't powercreep I don't know what it is. Yes, there are far more broken white cards in M10. And that's the real problem here.

this was printed in the same set as Coral Merfolk and goblin piker, both 2cc 2/1. m10 really favored white.

yes M10 favored white...exile is the new creature removal...baneslayer....this should be rare...that only really effects the masochist that like draft :)

The art for this is not very good for what its trying to convay. feels like an odd old school ice age art
