I'd say the scholar and this are both good, but have different uses. This one has its clas$ic use of tossing a trash topdeck for a chance at something better. The scholar can be used for the same purpose, but it can also be used in decks revolving around discards. You can force your opponent to discard something to activate megrim or bloodchief ascension guaranteeing that your opponent actually discards something. As an added bonus it will trigger drawing effects too such as underworld dreams.

.Fighter.- I'd say this. True, Reckless Scholar does have 1 more power, but it costs 1 more mana. You won't be using them to attack anyway, so who really cares about how little power these guys have. And besides, this has a slightly more relevant creature type.

quite a good common. cheapest mana cost to get the draw/discard ability, and no cost for the activation. turns every topdeck into an opportunity for more, and although you don't actually increase the number of cards in your hand, being able to have twice as many chances to find just the one you need is always good.

I love the artwork, even though it has legs. I can't determine if it's a girl or a guy, but at least it looks aquatic, which is more than can be said for the Merfolk Sovereign.
Note: True-Mumin, it's good because it wasn't created expressly for 2010; Merfolk Looter is an old classic card that has had many incarnations through the years.

good to use this ability and then discard wonder or brawn etc. or anything with a cheap flashback (roar of the wurm).

I'm guessing from the generous thigh showing, that the depiction in the card is female.

Love the artwork too. Looks like Merfolk with legs are becoming a trend.
