That "land" part is unnecessary.

T1 - Dark Ritual, Deathrite Shaman, Sinkhole
T2 - Exile the land you killed for 1 mana, start chaining 3CMC LD spells

Livin' the dream.
(Note that Deathrite will now ramp you due to having lands in the grave.

When a card is printed also as a Collector's and International Collector's Edition, you know that it was a mistake to print it as a common.

Frightening to think this card's rarity was originally common. Two mana for a land destruction spell is beyond absurd. Three mana is also apparently too good of a deal, Stone Rain has had it's cost adjusted and now we have Craterize. Same story with Counterspell becoming Cancel. Costing effects like these appropriately is awkward, if they are too cheap then the metagame is ruined, but if they cost too much they will never see the light of day. Land destruction is still seen in black, red, and green to this day, but now with much more caution. I think land destruction if done right could be fair. Maybe as a potential sideboard option for obnoxious 3+ color decks to throw a wrench in their plans, but maybe that's just me.

I did however order one of these for my pauper cube so when my friends are cracking open their packs and are thumbing through the cards, one of them will see this and be like ... (see all)

I hope they never re-print this. Yes, of course it would be too powerful in modern. You could argue that the slower a format is, the more deadly this becomes. More importantly, combining this with other disruptive cards creates an incredibly unfun deck. You never want effects like land destruction to be too powerful, because when a deck like that becomes part of the meta, it ruins the game. Land destruction isn't fun when it can be used to lock a player out.

I imagine a Black or Green turbofog deck could be played in modern if this was there. Accelerate your own land drops, let everyone draw a ton, slow down combats.

It'd be great if WOTC made me happier more often.
This needed to be a rare. Even at uncommon too many of these floating around in a draft would be too busted. If someone got this opening hand they might just handidly win the game. This is in the same set now with Strip Mine. Its a draft thing. Otherwise it would be an uncommon or even common like it was originally. I hope someday MTGO gets to be on PS3. PC is not enough of a spotlight for this game its too hardcore. It belongs with my living room couch

a bit disappointed that this went from a common to a rare.. perhaps so people will buy more me4 boosters? still, it's the best LD ever printed (with the possible exception of strip mine of course.

Making this rare increases the value of the 2ndary market, and wizards does not profit off that. Are people going to play more drafts just to get this or regrowth? Probably not... players are going to draft regardless.

Agreed, uncommon would have been fine for this and Regrowth. But money is money. And Wizards likes money.
@Hovercraft; I disagree. Uncommon is perfect for this in draft, while rare is perfect for Strip mine. It is difficult to run a single color, like monoblack, for a draft and make a good deck. It helps that a lot of nonrare bombs in this set are colorless, but that doesn't help you if you decide to draft Terror. Since you may need to include red in your deck for Primitive Justice or white in your deck for Divine offering, doubleblack won't often enough show up on your second turn to make it profitable. Stone Rain is great at common in draft formats that want to encourage players to draft only one or two colors, but hasn't been reprinted in a while because wizards simply doesn't want to.
It is very difficult to create a prison with cards that you draft. Sinkhole at common could do that, so it can't be common in this set, but uncommon would be fair, as you would, on average, only be ab... (see all)
