The artifact lands were just the last straw for making Affinity for Artifacts over-the-top broken powerful. Rather than ban all the Affinity cards, they instead banned these, since most non-Affinity decks would never even notice the difference.

Wrong. As of the posting of this comment, Darksteel Citadel is not banned in Modern. All of the rest are though. All of them are banned in Mirrodin Block.
