This is a good card. At pre-release, he wasn't as good as I imagined he'd be. In limited we have a great deal of artifact creatures that control him easily. Maybe I needed some nicer equipment for him. I can see this guy being better in constructed where artifact blockers are less commonplace and coloured removal spells are more important.

Wow the art makes it seem like like Etched Oracle's more bad-ass brother

I'm gonna have to say that this guy is my favorite card in the set. The art, plus the effectiveness of it all just makes me happy inside every time I draw this beast. He's MY champion, take THAT Gerrard!

The Field Marshal and Captain of the Watch love this machine. Protection from colors and able to be buffed by one of the strongest tribes in the game? this card is a solid 4.5

I have a rules question regarding interactions between a blocker with protection from the creature it's blocking, and the creature that's being blocked having trample. Let's say I'm attacking with a Rapacious One, and it's blocked by an Etched Champion or anything else that has protection from red.

Does my red trampler not assign any damage to the defending player or planeswalker on the basis that because the blocking creature has protection, it can't be assigned lethal damage by my red trampler? Or does trample damage still leak over while the would-be lethal damage to the blocker is prevented?

EDIT: Ok, question answered. I looked more at the comprehensive rules. The damage is still assigned, although prevented, and the trample damage still gets through. Nice. (702.17b)

My opinion is that this is a very mean artifact. I saw him used in a deck using artifact lands, Steel Overseer, and Energy Chamber. In an emperor game. It got almos... (see all)

Okay, Okay... He can be killed by a 3/3 colorless creature. But only by a colorless creature.
Take into consideration Mistmeadow Skulk. Paired together, these two cards can have protection from almost anything seriously dangerous.
Because its cmc is so low, and because you can buff him with Energy Chamber or something of the sort, imo its clearly a 5/5.

Also really cool Artwork. Kudos to Matt Cavotta.

This card is soooooo broken in extended, or really anything out of this very artifact heavy block, since it effectively says "Protection from everything." in a colored deck where most artifacts are just passive (Life gains) or just equipment.
