Lichens are symbiotic associations of an algae with a fungus. The creature type "plant fungus" was perfectly done for this card during the Oracle Update. Well done WotC!

Agree with madformedusa! The art and flavor are awesome. I think the auto-wither and slow regen are meant to simulate a lichen's vulnerability to physical disturbance and slow growth rate? It's just a shame it's so underpowered (no fair comparing it to a modern bomb though, Ace_Rimmer). I'll still put a one-of in my fungus deck for fun's sake.

Hmm... This guy could be (ab)used with Persist things. Something that has a "Whenever a creature comes into play" and something that sacks it. Difficult, though.

Hmm. It's not all that good, but at least the counters aren't permanent. Power Conduit might work.

Actually, madformedusa is not entirely correct. Lichens are indeed an symbiotic associations of an algae with a fungus. But algae are not considered plants, not scientifically anyway. I understand though that it wouldn't be too logical for a fantasy game to just has that one creature with the algae creature type so it can be scientifically correct. Now go and fix the Giant Solifuge's creature type because it is not an insect and the other arachnids have their own creature types.

It should have said "During your upkeep, remove a -1/-1 counter from Lichenthrope. If it has no -1/-1 counters, instead add a +1/+1 counter to Lichenthrope."
