Scion of Darkness will not bring back what you sac (these guys), unless you can somehow find a way to have it deal combat damage to yourself.

He is an awesome fellow, and does an especially great job in a Cleric deck, allowing a Scion of Darkness already in turn 2 if things work out nicely, and later on if you sacrifice your clerics with a Rotlung Reanimator in play you won't regret it either. This guy makes Cleric decks more competitive.
And i think Etregan is right, the Herald cycle from Shards of Alara was likely inspired by this card.
Unfortunately though, as opposed to this goodie, these are pretty useless and boring.
The Heralds do not only require three mana to activate their ability, they need two other creatures of different colors to sacrifice - which is pretty hard to manage, and are even only able to find the card if it's in your library.
I normally like such cards which are able to fetch other cards with a certain name, but the Herald cycle was a poor unplayable cycle of pitious uncommons...may this never happen again.

This card is absolutely fantastic, I'd rather draw him than the actual scion. Not only that but Scion of Darkness will bring back what you sac'd... best part scion isn't legendary you bring back Dark Supplicant and repeat. In-freaking-sane.
