This is a great example of a card that has pretty much stayed at a constant level of power throughout all of magic's history. Being really good but never broken in any foramt. I don't think any other card can claim that feat as much as this guy, hopefully its return to standard (curretent gone from Innistrad/Return to Ravnica) isn't too far away.

I think we should all thank Mark Poole for drawing the bird too prominent.
So regarding the story how the mana birds came to be in the first place, it seems adequate to quote Bob Ross:

Will always be a staple in a lot of decks. The ability to ramp on turn one is huge and the fact that you're able to produce any color mana is just the most delicious icing on a tasty cake.

@ Ibn_Shisha Unless your opponent has 1 life with no blockers. Not strictly better.
