This card made no sense to me until I saw one of those Mentos: The Freshmaker commercials.
I think this card wins some kind of "strangest pun to show up on a Magic card" award.
Given that pun, the flavor text make it sound like Lorthos has terribly unfresh breath when he wakes up in the morning. I bet there's a mint that can help with that...

Yes! I can finally make my Lovecraft deck!
This card is lacking in abilities that would greatly improve it, like Shroud or Trample, but aside from that, this card is great. Blue control in a big package.

I love the 8/8/8/8 theme, but I wish he was a kraken. White has angels. Black has demons. Red has dragons. Green has...well. practically everything it has is ginormous! (But I want wurms to be their main guy) But blue is supposed to have krakens and leviathans as their juggernaut, closesly followed by sphinxes. Oh well...it's a great card. The second turn it attacks, you can have 16 permanents tapped. :P

Are you all seriously complaining about this card? All I have to say is O M G, awesome card, big 8/8 creature for blue! and it doesn't have to require some silly defending player using island ability to work, and lets take a second look at that 8 mana ability. You can use it any time you have 8 mana, to tap almost everything for 2 turns, dang. Its a huge creature with a built in sleep spell, and if you don't know how powerful a sleep spell can be then should try one out. Note that it says "permanents" not creatures! That means you can tap all their lands if you want to as well, and they don't untap for 2 turns, meaning if they don't doom blade your lorthos right away, they can't use eight lands next turn. The turn after that you can tap the other lands, and your opponent can't play anymore lands the rest of the game. Could also tap half their lands, and some of their creatures, or even some of their mana producing artifacts. That is one fantastic creature, play it in a blue gre... (see all)

An 8/8 with 8 CMC, an ability that costs 8 and taps 8, all on an octopus. And it's named "Lorthos."

I like this card. And I wrote this to recite whenever I play. Done correctly it adds to the suspense:

Man am i sick of hearing about doomblade, and seeing it mentioned on every creature with a cc of 4 or higher
according to people who put up "doom blade is better than this,"
doomblade is also better than about 3,500 other creatures
(those are creatures that are not black indistructible and dont have shroud)
will everyone just shut the f up about doomblade, we get it already, it is cheap, it kills creatures, we know that.
besides, thanks to people like you who go on about doomblade, i managed to pick one of these guys up for a couple of bucks,
Probably my favourite card in magic, just for flavour, he is in my blue stuff deck, full of lots and lots of blue stuff, including psychic venoms, tap down all your opponents lands that don't have venoms attached, A third of your lands are poisoned, the other two thirds have lorthos's tentacles wrapped round them
I think he deserves his mythic rarity status, he is just too plane awesome
