Limited, Limited, Limited! That is what this card is made for and that is what it is. It is just fine where it is.

Venerated Teacher makes virtually every overcosted-to-level leveller in this set ridiculous. For 5RU, you get Lightning Bolt on a stick.
Pretty difficult to make useful, though. Most people will just run Cunning Sparkmage anyway *shrug*

Yes, this card is expensive to level, no question. One of the most expensive, as a matter of fact. Yes, it's not great at all in constructed. However, it's crazy good in limited. It's one of those cards that single-handedly forces your opponent to try to play around it if they can't remove it, especially if you can get him out early. You can be pinging x/1 creatures on turn four, without any ramp. I won a few of my games at the ROE launch party tonight on the back of this card. One time he simply wiped the board of my opponent's creatures. Great limited card, and much more powerful than I initially thought.

I love this guy, because fire is awesome. Also because when I get him out, he either draws removal away from something I'm more attached to, or I get him out so late that I can level him to three the same turn he comes out. The second is a testimony to how slow my playing style is.

It's difficult for me to like this card simply because I hate the level up mechanic, a lot. I hate playing against it, and I feel dirty using it.
But moving on. At worst it's a prodigal pyromancer with Eco and a bit more meat on his bones. While at best, he's a lightning bolt on a stick that cant be removed by any typical burn spells.
In my opinion, a good card. As for limited or constructed? He could be used for either if properly abused. Venerated Teacher makes him quite nasty.
Blue decks, I get the impression, will quite hate this guy.
