Wound up with about 4 of these in my draft deck at the launch party. I left them out, but I should have played some of them, because I was short on 2-drops, and my goblin grenade sat uselessly in my hand most of the time. Even this guy has his role.

I do think Goblin Shortcutter would be a good core set replacement, but then red would need another plain vanilla creature somewhere, and let's face it, they're always bad. At least Bonebreaker Giant is an improvement on M11's Berserkers of Blood Ridge.

If it's any consolation to this guy, 2/1 creatures for 2 are commonly called Pikers. Of course, most of them are better than him.

Please, just, just go away. You've filled one to many slots that could have been a usable card in my boosters.

Ok, here's a thing:

Lance. That's a card. It gives enchanted creature First Strike. In reality, it is a long spear-like weapon.

Pike. A weapon used in Medieval times. It is a long spear-like weapon.

PIKE = LANCE = FIRST STRIKE.

GOBLIN PIKER =/ FIRST STRIKE

I know changing the card now wouldn't make sense, but why didn't they initially make the card with First Strike? maybe even a 1/1? Why why why why why why why?!

I'm taking this guy to Worlds. No, I'm dead serious. 2 power on a goblin! If you play a lord he has 3! Merfolk have nothing on him, except maybe a cantrip.

They really need to stop reprinting this. Goblin Shortcutter is much more useful, represents red's mechanics better, and also works perfectly well in the core set. There's no reason to keep reprinting this trash instead of him.

Let's propose neat abilities for the vanilla creatures that get printed in each new core set. Who knows, a bored Wizards developer may happen upon one...

---

Bludgeon 1Red (When Goblin Piker deals combat damage to a player, you may pay 1Red. If you do, Goblin Piker deals damage equal to its power to target creature.)

I think it's okay to give new players cards like this, because they need to figure out which end of the thing is sharp first. If you throw at them a bunch of powerful cards w/ a ton of texts, they're gonna get confused really quick. Let them start out with simple things, and then let them explore what they decide to be 'good' or 'bad', and eventually they'll become more experienced players. After all, letting them fail is letting them learn.
Furthermore, in a game of a new player against a new player, what's wrong with a Goblin Piker vs. a Runeclaw Bear?
