Creatures with good abilities are the best, and this one has three. Also it is a vampire which makes it awesome with stromkirk captain. First strike + deathtouch = awesome

I will put four copies of this card into every moderately black deck I make. I will ALWAYS want more Vampire Nighthawks. And every night I dream of the day it returns to me in standard again.

One of the first cards i used when i began playing magic and is still to this day one of, if not my favorite card. Staple for every black deck i can think of and i see no reason not to run it in anything even splashing black.
