When I first saw this, I questioned the flavour. What is it about this hammer that is so self-destructive to the wielder? Is some soldier clinging desperately to his army-issue Dead-Iron Sledge, cowering in his trench in the knowledge that if he actually kills someone, the maul will kill him? Was it crafted as some practical joke, blowing up soldiers as they tried a few practice swings? Then I recalled the perfect flavourful wielder for this weapon- goblins.

Some poor goblin is dragging this into battle. He swings it overhead, but due to the immense weight, the little goblin is forced to let go at the pinnacle of his swing. The hammer hits some charging soldier, bounces off the skull (imagine this in slow motion for best effect), flips over, and utterly crushes it's former wielder. Seconds tick by, and another goblin starts to warily approach the weapon...

It's the perfect weapon for an hero.

I used to love this card, even not just regarding flavor. Yet the equip cost always bugged me.
But it's pretty much overshadowed these days anyways:
Unless you'll encounter creatures with first strike or if you're going to equip a valorous or by other means courageous an hero,
i really advise using Basilisk Collar instead.

Quit complaining about equip costs. There are plenty of critters that can activate to attach equipment to critters, and unlike deathtouch mechanics, this is beyond damage mechanics. If you really want to snipe some creatures, Basilisk Collar fulfills that function with pingers and creatures like Pestilence Demon can be used to clear the board.

However, If you have say, Prized Unicorn or Taunting Elf, or some such, you can wrath someone's board and leave yours relatively untouched. If you want to preserve your creature that's doing this, there are a variety of ways to regenerate it or make it temporarily indestructible.

This goes great with Dead-Iron Sledge so you can repeat this effect with different creatures if you need to.

Significantly worse than Basilisk Collar, although not quite strictly worse.
