Quite possibly the best artifact creature! If you've got the mana you can mow down their entire army. 5/5.

Probably the 2nd best creature ever printed, behind Morphling.

Scars of Mirrodin may have a Masticore. MaRo's latest column has some slick new Masticore art, which may be a preview of a new card.

Edit: The art turned out to be for the From The Vault: Relics version of this card.

Umm, hello? Anyone think of Training Grounds? Have this wipe out the entire side of their field for free + free regeneration? Umm, heck yea!!!

I feel like I must be missing something here--I can't get past the discard requirement. Maybe in a reanimator deck? I get that it's awesome board control, especially for blue, removes blockers and so on, but the ability seems too mana intensive to be much use outside of really casual games. Am I just underestimating this or isthere some trick I don't get?

@Kikke:
I just watched someone open a pack of Unlimited Edition on a Youtube video. Alongside cards like Mox Ruby and Sinkhole, the pack included Ironroot Treefolk and Gray Ogre. Creatures back then sucked. I know creatures in Urza's Saga were much better than in Unlimited, but they were still far from overpowering non-creature spells like Dark Ritual and Yawgmoth's Will.

The game is designed to include creature combat. Combat is extremely flavorful and fun, includes very difficult skill-testing decisions, and is filled with opportunities to show off discovered synergies. Not having decent creatures shuts off an important part of the game. In fact, I think it's reasonable to say it's the most important part of the game. The designers and developers today are careful to make both creatures and non-creature spells powerful enough to use.

And now fo... (see all)

This beast created a specific creature type from its name! Not a thing you see every day...
