Definitely love this guy in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. It can take some effort to get him out, but, by thunder, is it satisfying when he does his thing. And I second Cute-Hydra. While this card may not be great in competitive play, everything about the styling, flavor, and mechanics of this card scream mythic worthy. I mean, in order to be mythic, one must have songs sung of them.

It doesn't matter what comes,
'Twill be tapped in due time
When Lorthos taps their permanents!
Nothing gets to you,
Staying tapped, staying blue,
When Lorthos taps their permanents!
Tapped is better!
Lorthos tapping!
Tapped is better
When Lorthos taps their permanents!
Lorthos, the Tidemaker.

Mythic rares aren't supposed to be suitable for competitive play, but people forget that because a few, like Lotus Cobra, Baneslayer Angel and Jace, the Mind Sculptor apparently show up at every tournament. Better examples of what mythic cards should look like are Platinum Emperion, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Lorthos here: huge mana costs, huge bodies and devastating, interesting effects. Lorthos obviously isn't a tournament card, so he shouldn't be evaluated as one. Tournament Magic isn't the only kind that exists; cards like this are just fun. In a casual multiplayer game, the giant octopus wiped the floor with me and another guy without breaking a sweat, as he clearly can. He can freeze eight permanents and swing for the same amount of damage? I'd say he's pulling his own weight there. This is a game-winner in the right hands.

But is it better than Stormtide Le... (see all)

@monogreentramp

I guess you weren't playing by the rules because Legendary Creatures can't be replicated or cloned, it removes the original creature.

@ Donovan_Fabian

Weird...I JUST finished a game with a G/U deck revolving around this creature. The problem was I played against another blue control deck and the game ended up lasting forever >_< I still ended up winning, but didn't get to use the spell until turn 16, the last turn. Before that it was a ton of canceling, mind controlling, and sleeping. Epic match nonetheless.

But yeah, I use land ramp to get him out as soon as possible. And for all the doom-bladers out there, I don't even think about dropping him without 2-3 reserve mana for negate or cancel. So yeah, it takes 10 mana to REALLY drop him with confidence. So that's around turn 6-7ish with Harrow, Khalni Heart Expedition, and Terramorphic Expanse

I have to admit, it's sort of a pain to get him ... (see all)

This card if loaded with flavor and it's neat to boot. I would enjoy slapping one of these on the table. The art also gives you a good read on just how large he is. This is coupled with his large scale ability.

Good Design, Wizards. This is the stuff I like to see.

I'm just going to make sure, but you people realize that it says "Those permanents don't untap during their controllers' next untap steps." Steps. That means until someone loses they're tapped to this ability, unless some other card forces them to untap. Maybe most of you already noticed but I'm just saying to make sure people see that it says steps and not just step.

Oh? Then nevermind this then. Personally I forgot about the next thing, but the whole usage of "steps" threw me off.

@ Japicx: I remember how they said that about mythic rares too. "Don't worry guys, this rarity is just for the fun, swingy cards, not for the tournament staples." Apparently they are terrible at identifying tournament staples, or they decided the prospect of increasing the number of packs needed to get a chase rare fivefold was too good to pass up. I'm betting it was the money that inspired them, both to create mythic rares and to make cards like Jace and the Titans mythic rares. Personally, I never believed them when they said that about mythic rares; it was always about the money.
