Thanks to the rules regarding layering, if you put Giant Growth on this card, and exchange its toughness with a life total of 1, it will be a 3/4 until end of turn and your life total becomes 16.

So, run it with Umbral Mantle and Channel to gain unlimited life.

The art of this card seems to be based on the famous real life tree, the Angel Oak. Do an image search for it and you'll see the incredible likeness.

@ezuna
Rolling stones only gives walls the ability to attack and this is a plant
@unfinishe
If you have a you can't lose condition in the board (such as platinum angel) you can sit on your 0 or less life total and switch whenever. Otherwise the game recognizes you as "dead" as a statebased effect. Checking when people and creatures die happens before priority is passed making you unable to even activate the ability.

A combo lovely as a tree.

Joyce Kilmer said that.

Very useful. "What's that? I'm at 2 life and you're attacking with Two Goblins? Hmm..."

Funny as hell with Sanguine Bond. Also a nice failsafe with Near-Death Experience

@Mike-C: No, dealing damage to it won't lower its toughness, you're just piling damage on to it (remember dealing damage equal to a creature's toughness destroys it but lowering it's toughness to 0 causes it to go to the graveyard regardless of indestructibility). If you want to do what you're saying, you're going to need to at least -0/-12 this tree. 2 Dismembers would take it down to 3 toughness or 3 Grasp of Darknesses to bring it down to 1 toughness

That aside, an activated Beastmaster Ascension (or any other toughness booster for that matter) plus Freed from the Real would let your life (and by extension, its toughness) escalate by 5 everytime you exchange life with him twice in a row.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet, but I want to make a dedicated lifegain deck using this as the win condition with Feed the Pack. Run 4 each of the Wardens (Soul Warden, Essence Warden, and Soul's Attendant. Get your life up there, swap it, sac the thing, get a ton of creatures and gain all that life back from the Wardens. Rinse and repeat and enjoy your massive army of 2/2 wolves.
