quick question if there is no legal target will the two other abilities fizzle? (the can't gain life and damage can' be prevented)

when a "do this" and a "don't do this" ability collide, the "don't do this" always wins - in this case the damage is not prevented

Now that Gatecrash is all spoiled, I guess I can start doing these again.
Skullcrack. Where to start. Well I guess I can observe that burn decks, or just RDW in general seems to be playable every other standard. Scars-Innistrad RDW was pretty bad, probably because Zendikar-Scars was so good (how could it not be with Lightning Bolt around, along with all those delicious burn spells Zendikar Block had?) This card, along with Vexing Devil et. al. gives me hope that we can soon once again start the countdown from 20, or should I say 18 with all these fancy shocklands? Shuts down half of Sphinx's Revelation, Thragtusk's bonus, and Trostani for a turn, among other lifegain in standard. And then it cracks their skull for 3. Pretty good I'd say. 4/5
