Best creature next to Dark Confidant

To be honest, I would rather play Flesh Reaver, Jötun Grunt or Keldon Marauders instead of Tarmogoyf (mostly because I like money). It's so boring to go to Modern or Legacy and see goyfs running around all day every day... The day someone sides in Tempting Wurm to replace goyfs in Legacy against a non-Show and Tell deck would be a happy day.

Here it is folks, the most overrated card in the history of magic. Step right up and get your $130 vanilla creature with no evasion that dies to everything.

That may have sounded a bit extreme. Don't get me wrong, I know why this card is good. I also know why it's not THAT good, and why it isn't even worth a tenth of its price, and why there are usually better choices for a deck.

It's either hate rating or outright confusion.

This + Dredge + A varied deck = ~5/6 for two mana.

No, you are NOT meant to play it right away.

Yes, cheap power is all that it is.

Do you not realise just how good that is?

This set includes, in fair amount, all the types it counts.

This could, theoretically, be a 8/9 creature for two mana. Realistically about 5 - 6/ 6 -7.

Quick, cheap power. You attack with it, and then you probably win. There is nothing wrong with this card.

Even if you don't like the playing of this card (against you), at least appreciate how it actually revealed Planeswalker's; the reminder text included them before they were actually released.

An 0/1 for 2 as a mythic? This is hugely underwhelming, Wizards.

I would be much happier pulling dork confidant than this, but at least hes ultra pricey trade-bait...

However, I cant rate him less than 4/5 due to the power he emanates, I kinda wish I played green.

4/5 Stars

Ok, I get how it can be effective and dangerous in both early and late game situations.... Here's what I don't get, why is it that everyone saying "the best creature ever" can't see that there are many creatures that are just as effective. For tarmogoyf to be effective you have to have the right deck, the right draw and the right strategy.... Otherwise he is next to useless, what if I told you it were possible to cast Jund Hackblades for 2mana that come into play as a 9/8 with haste? Is he now worth $175+ as well? Same weaknesses as the aforementioned tarmogoyf, same mana cost, equally deadly. Also just like Tarmogoyf, his badassery depends on a lot of other cards to make him a beast. So if you think he's worth the money, by all means pay for it. Hell even in standard you can have a 10/10 with double strike, lifelink and trample all while giving your creature protection from a color on turn 4. Point being with all the options out there, there's no way it's worth that much money.

I'll... (see all)

I can see this is already somewhat degenerating into certain inaccuracies, so let me clarify:

You don't play 'Goyf in dredge or selfmill. I mean, you could, but there a better reanimator targets for dredge and bigger creatures for selfmill.

'Goyf goes into any deck with fetchlands and instants or sorceries you might want to cast. It is not unusual for a Tarmogoyf to be a 3/4 on turn 2 and you can pretty much expect it to be consistently a 4/5 or 5/6 on the turns past that. Essentially, the 'Goyf is bigger than average early in the game and scales appropriately into the late game.
