Possibly the most powerful of the 5 gods. Both of his signature abilities can be game-changing, even in decks not built around him.

Preventing your opponents from gaining life is one thing - it shuts down life gain and a few other shenanigans like exquisite blood + sanguine bond, or life changers like invincible hymn, tree of redemption, and eternity vessel. But being able to draw cards by paying life is another entirely! I can very easily see this being banned in Commander and Modern.

I imagine most black mages are going to be using Erebus to counter Sphinx's Revelation.

@TheWrathofShane Get over yourself, bub. Although, I'm glad you described Gods and Devils as "nonsense" because that's exactly what they are... except in MTG.

All "Gods" are equally fictitious. Might as well pray to Erebos.

CONTINUED FROM DARTH PARALLAX:

TheWrathofShane: it's not so much that WOTC ''doesn't care about 2 billion Christians"-- it's that most of the world has been effected by Christian Culture, which is strongly ingrained in our Medieval Fantasy and Art, but ALSO, that same Western Tradition was HEAVILY touched by Greco-Roman and Norse Pagans, and the Pagans seem to have a similar opinion to Gods that you might expect from Easter Philosophers.....and just quite frankly, the Holy Bible is an incredibly unpopular text, because its Absoluteness goes directly against what Philosophy tends to lead us to believe. People tend to favor the Greek and Pagan and Eastern View, ESPECIALLY if it starts to sound like Star Wars to them....

I personally, am one of those people, and we are like that because we find the idea that the Bible to be True BOTH:

A) Frustratingly Uncertain, even when a dedicated honest person tries to find out, they hit Paradox and Mystery and it's a matter of Faith, not Knowledg... (see all)

I need one of these signed by James Woods, with an artist-alter of blue flaming hair. :P

I'm going to restate the comment in question for people to see:

"I guess they dont care about the 2 billion Christians. Nice work printing "God" as a creature type, as well as "Devil" and all the other nonsense
1) Atheists dont give a shit either way
2) Way to lose customers for nothing
And here come the wave of 1/2 star votes." --The Wrath of Shane

WrathofShane: I'm sure I'm going to get a slew of 1/2 star votes too, bub, so I feel your pain. :/
I think some of your points are off, because first, WOTC presents a very 'holistic' view in a Fantasy land. That's just always going to be popular and get them more customers, not fewer. Read Ravnica Lore, and they even let RAKDOS have 'a place and a purpose', even though the rest of their own guilds in their own world think they're crazy. White Lanterns might see something in Rakdos, but even most Blue and Violet ones would say Rakdos should be stamp... (see all)

I can see this guy getting banned as a commander. Not immediately, mind you, but it will happen.

Seeing as how Erayo, Soratami Ascendant was banned as a commander, I suspect all the gods will be as well. Looking forward to finding out. Because Purphoros, God of the Forge would be really interesting.

I'm personally somewhat disappointed by Erebos... He is the only God to break the cycle of having either 1 CMC more or 1 less than his weapon, his static ability seems rather specialized (no one ever played Havoc Festival or Forsaken Wastes), and his Greed is very greedy indeedy.

I'm not as sold on Erebos as most people are. His static ability is pretty situational and won't matter most of the time unless you're playing against UWx Control, and two life and two mana is a hefty price for one card, even at instant speed and without a tap clause. He'll probably see some Standard play, but not as much as Purphoros or Thassa will. Devour Flesh is very nice with him, though.
