At first, I thought this was a sometimes better, sometimes worse reprint of Infest.

But no! Infest came out 2 years after! How interesting!

That being said, this card works wonders with Ascendant Evincar, the creature pictured. See, your creatures are pumped (most likely, since you're playing black) and your opponents are not (unless they're playing black).

If he is out, the only creatures you have that will die are cards with an initial toughness of 1.
On the flip-side, all your opponents non-black creatures that have a toughness of 3 will die, no questions asked.

Very nice, and the free cost is just gravy.

Free things are always nice, but not every deck runs low toughness creatures. This is a strong sideboard card to hose weenie.
