The art looks like it should be on a better creature, but what would really do it justice besides a creature that sucks out all life and gives it to you? (for a hefty price, of course)
I thought the ability was overpriced at first too, but really, any cheaper really would cause me to actually play it. i tend to use Urborg Syphon-Mage instead, but i do realize there are different situations for each. 5/5 for the art, 3/5 for the good but overpriced ability.

Before I found this card by randomly jumping across Gatherer, I used the art on it in a custom deck I designed with an assassin theme. This guy was the planeswalker. That's how awesome this art is.

A shame one of the nicest pieces of art in the game is ruined by a so-so card. It's Vanilla at best b/c you won't waste the man using the abilities.....

Definitely the best artwork of all the guildmages. I liked this guy's second ability for EDH, but the addition of extort unfortunately obsoletes him.
@ Splizer
We definitely need an Assassin's Creed set in Russia.

I just wish the card itself were as great as the art.
In that case though, it would probably get the "restrict it in Vintage, ban it everywhere else"-treatment.
Oh well. He can still find good use in a Training Grounds deck.

Might as well be a runeclaw bear. Abilities are so overpriced and underwhelming might as well not be on the card.
