The other 4 are clearly enchantments, while a lance should be an artifact. But they didn't have Equipment back in the day. This isn't the last time an enchantment would be made that flavorwise should have been an artifact (Lashknife, anyone?).

Why use Lance when you could use the new and improved Shadow Lance!
In all honesty this card is a classic, back in the day you wouldn't have tons of huge creatures poping out early game (at least not in the games I played) and having first strike on a medium sized body could really make the game.

A simple aura, why Flight, Regeneration, Fear, and Burrowing were printed in 4th and not this card baffles me, especially since I would use this over the other members of this quasi-cycle...

Lance needed to get his picture taken for his Magic card, but couldn't find a photographer. He tried to take the picture himself, but screwed up the camera timer and ended up just getting a picture of his spear and some rocks.
