@Condor_96: It's not fight because fight is "Each of those creatures deals damage to the other," which happens at the same time, whereas Tahngarth deals his damage first, so I think state-based actions will check before the ability finishes, and if the targeted creature is dead, it won't deal its damage to Tahngarth.

Just put some equipment on him. He's a beast by himself but equipping him with, say Sword of Fire and Ice and he'll do so much damage.

For multiplayer games, a Darksteel Plate would probably be handy.

This ability is better than "fights target creature" because he deals the damage first. If your opponent can't handle having their creatures bashed by four damage, this guy is going to cream them.
Vigilance just makes this gross. "Attack, block, end-of-turn I'm going to smash another one of your dudes."

he's a pretty underrated general if ran as voltron, he can easily clear generals off the board

The game doesn't check for state-based effects until someone would receive priority. This is functionally the same as the fight keyword. Well, there's probably some card somewhere that makes it not the same. Nothing that I can think of though.

Tahngarth doing the damage first does matter, if he somehow gets wither or infect. Then the other creature's power will be less when it hits back. Tahngarth with a Blight Sickle can kill an 8/5 creature and live. If the ability was changed to fight, he would still kill that creature, but would die in the process.

@Condor_96: No, his ability isn't the same as fight. Tahngarth deals his damage to the targeted creature first and then that creature hits Tahngarth. Usually it wouldn't matter, but in the event of Tahngarth having Wither or Infect, it'll change the targeted creature's power and possibly make it unable to kill Tahngarth as a result.

@sarroth: State-based actions are only ever checked just before a player would get priority (i.e. able to cast spell or activate abilities). No players get priority while a spell or ability is resolving.

Have him fight your opponent's squishy wizard, then trade with your opponents own 4/4! His 2-for-1 potential is great. Vigilance is extra icing on the cake, since he could demolish a blocking 0/8 wall.
