No reason for this card to have had the upkeep cost of removing a counter. It would have been a decent card without it, a possible beater for madness decks.
Wizards SERIOUSLY overestimated how good the madness mechanic would be.

You know, I don't think this guy is as bad as people say. I mean yeah, he's not exactly good and Mindless Automaton is far better, but he's in a fairly supported creature type now (due to the Splicers from New Phyrexia) and he has does get counters for {1} and a discard, which can be a possibly good thing.
Make no mistake, he's not by any means good, but I do think he deserves a 1.5-2 instead of a 1 or lower.
