@Wormfang: I think the thing you consider to be wings of the insect is... a flower.
The art is pretty, but seems kind of random.
There's a hummingbird that's like "That's some good nectar in that flower!" and the supposedly deadly (and shrouded) insect stands right below that flower and is probably thinking "damn, i wish i could taste some of that stuff!"

Like Erhnam Djinn, Deadly Insect is obsolete now, but in his day he was a champio. The strategy was to play this guy in a red-green deck. The burn cleared the way for the Insects. Anything too big to bolt would be a decent trade, but with mana ramp (including Orcish Lumberjack and Tinder Wall, this guy could usually beat the opposition fatties out of the gate.
Sure trample and haste would have made him better, but this guy didn't really suffer their lack.

This was one of the very first Shroud creatures. It saw a lot more use than you'd think at the time, since when it came out creatureless decks that relied on removal were pretty common... of course, they were all running Wrath of God and Balance, so it didn't help much...
