The art reminded me of Defensive Stance.
As a rule, 2cmc counter spells are definitely worth finding a way to use, and (as mentioned) Scornful Egotist does this nicely. However, if you want to surprise the opponent using Egotist's ability, you're paying 3 mana for that first counter.

this card deserves at least a 3. after all, it's a hard counter for only 2 cmc. most of the time their spells are going to fall within range of your own permanents. this has been a staple in my counter deck for years now, and nothing replaces it alongside essence scatter. u do realize hard counters in standard now cost 3 cmc, right?
