This actually works perfectly as an "Inspire" ability. According to Myth, Midas was offered a reward for bringing Silenus back to Dionysus, and he asked that whatever he might touch should change into gold. After he was given this gift, he rushed home to put the ability to the test, choosing items outside and inside his house to be turned into gold. He didn't go into combat and strike a random foe, thus turning them to gold. He looked around the house for inspiration, and chose what would turn to gold.

As far as the may portion of the clause, it would have had to be either that, or it would have had to be "exile another target creature". Really, it should have been another permanent, or non-land permanent. He technically turned the river sands of the Pactolus to gold, when he relinquished his powers by cleansing himself in the waters.

Macar is one of the best cards in Journey for draft.

Removal in limited is always valuable. Gild itself is quite valuable, since it can get rid of a creature pretty efficiently. A creature that has the capability to remove a creature each turn for free (essentially) is extremely valuable.

Macar just needs either one free attack step or a conduit of tapping. Weirdly, I think Theros has quite a few ways to tap your own/auto... (see all)

The reason it's a "may" ability is because he doesn't have to reach out and touch something.

Also, that gold toga must be horribly uncomfortable.

This card really should cost {2}{W}{B}. Not for balance nor flavor purposes, but so it could be a gold card.

So much flavor! Great cost for a 2/3 Gild on legs. However, it would be a lot more flavorful if they removed the "may" clause on his ability; Midas's story was tragic because he everything he touched HAD to turn into gold, not turned into gold if he WANTED it to.

Repeatable exile that is only stopped by Hexproof, Protection, and Shroud?

Come, King Macar, your curse must weigh heavily upon you... Once you are Freed From the Real, I am certain you will feel much better...

Flavor fix:

"Inspired — Whenever King Macar, the Gold-Cursed becomes untapped, exile target artifact, creature or planeswalker.
If you do, put a colorless artifact token named Gold onto the battlefield. It has "Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
"

• No "may"-clause:
It's a CURSE, for crying out loud. Where on earth is the downside if you MAY turn people into gold?
Midas would have been the happiest person if he could have kept drinking from his goblet and embrace his daughter.

• Don't restrict the target to creatures:
It should affect anything physical. Midas couldn't turn whole landscapes into gold, but non-living objects (e.g. stones or food as in the original myth) should be affected as well. Planeswalkers should be affected by the touch just as any other being. Enchantment creatures are also affected this way.

Melvin bonus (as suggested by Ritokure):
Make him multicolored, so he can be a gold card.

Great card, one of my favorites in the set. Would have preferred this as creature type Noggle instead of Human though.

I'm trying to see the downside here. Still can't find it.
