I find the Hounds to be exceptionally useful in reanimation decks--a sight better than Mind Maggots, at any rate. They often end up being a bigger threat than the Exhumed fatties themselves, and can serve as solid chumps in the event of a reanimation drought, buying an extra turn or two for you to draw the card you need to resurrect a game-winner.

I think this card is awesome. It has work pleasingly well in my Vampire deck and I love the ability. But the draw back is that in my Vampire deck theres only so many times i can dig out a creature in my graveyard and Its hard to choose a card I want to discard. Other than that this card is great

Surprisingly versatile card. Better than Wild Mongrel in many respects (save for the mana cost, of course). Also the cheapest Vampire in MTG at the moment. Great surprise swinging with one of these and then watching your opponent's face reel in horror as you discard 2-3 creatures. Amazing in limited. "OK' in constructed. Great in block with Recurring Nightmare/Tortured Existence and all the other nice reanimators around this time.

Old combo I heard of back in high school:

turn 0
: Dark ritual, play Vampire Hounds

turn 1
: (requires that your opponent does NOT play any creatures during his/her turn.) Vampire Hounds, attack, controller discards Four creature cards. (opponent is now down to 10). play Fling.

Game End

Unfortunately, this combo is too strict to achieve in real time.

No longer the cheapest vampires, child of night is on the scene! But don't fret, the new (M10) set brings with it vampire nocturnus, to buff these doggies into real Cujos. :)

Boss. Using grave scrabblers and basking rootwallas, I've swung for 12 on turn 2 with this guy, and had all the discarded creatures hit play. They made a better megrim, all I want from wizards is a cheaper version of this guy.

Raw power wise the Hound is not as powerful as other creatures that pump themselves by 'sacrificing' creatures in play, because you can have way more than 7 creatures in play for such effect.

However, discarding creatures is combo-licious with reanimation. In fact, one of the Exodus pre-cons was a reanimation deck that uses the Hound, Mind Maggots, and Skyshroud Vampire.
