The first thought I had when I saw this card was 'really? 15 cmc? Epic!". The cost is outrageous, but convoke and mana acceleration can get this guy into play in no time at all. That said you could actually summon him with Dramatic Entrance for five; now if thats not the definition of epic, then I don't now what is.

I got a turn 2 win thanks to this guy:
Turn 1: Swamp, Dark Ritual for an Entombed and Exhumed Volrath the Fallen.
Turn 2: another swamp and then attacked with Volrath discarding Autochton Wurm to make Volrath a 21/19 creature.
That was definitely my best starting hand ever but my opponent was a little annoyed...

Your correct about Johnny and Timmy, but Spike is the "tourney player". Spike uses only the best and most efficient cards, no matter the costs to his wallet. He only cares about his win loss record. Wizards tend to ignore spike when designing cards, because spike will just look up his decks online and use the best cards in the format. They don't have to try to appeal to spike like they do with Timmy and Johnny. We all have a little spike in us. Spike plays to win, and that's what everyone is trying to do in the end.
But there is also Vorthos alongside Spike, Johnny, and Timmy. Vorthos loves flavor and will use weaker cards because they fit the flavor and theme of the deck better. I think there is a "Melvin" too but I forgot what that kids all about!

I love how he was the go-to creature for size comparisons before the 9-year-olds designed the last Zendikar set (you know who I'm talking about). The thought of maybe getting him for super cheap or even free is a fun idea.
BUT, if your deck can consistently get out 15 or so creatures, don't be dumb. Just run Overrun instead and end the game. This is a pretty good example of a "win-more" card.

Army of the Damned. 9/14 Trampler for 5 mana. You'd need an entire field wipe to clear that horde.
