"do target player still discard when threads of undeath was used to play this card from graveyard?"
You didn't cast Shrieking Grotesque at all, let alone use a black mana while doing so. Nobody will be forced to discard.

Even if it dies to removal, you've already gained card advantage. I like.

I'd argue this is comparable to Hypnotic Specter now.
1) Wizards is pushing Color-Specific Hate less than they used to.
2) Wizards is rewarding Color-Dense less than they used to (mono-color is just bad, three color is what the skilled and affluent play, 5 color is seen surprisingly often. the rewards are far greater for successful splashing)
3) Wizards is making Mana Fixing a little better at Rare (Rares have always been pretty good though, considering the Onslaught Fetches, Ravnica Shocks, and City and Birds) and outstanding at common and uncommon compared to the past.
Meaning that it's really Quite significant that MBC is probably just a whole lot weaker that Gilding/Guilding it with Orzhov.
Oh yeah, and ETB effects are good, apparently. Especially reuse/abuse of said.

The art makes it look like it should have haste.
