Training Grounds makes him Turn 6, Level 6 with plenty of mana to spare for other spells such as counterspells, and the aforementioned basilisk collar.

This guy shines as early as level one. Think about it. What in the whole color of {R} can hit the board turn 3 or 4 and smash face as a stable 6/6 with no drawbacks turn 4 to 5 and on? Blade-Tribe Berserkers can be just that for only one turn, and then reverts to being Canyon Minotaur, where as this is just goes in the opposite frigging direction.

This is a good card in limited without the level-up ability, the level-up makes him fantastic, in constructed, his level-up cost hurts him, if it was , I could see it being played in constructed....

Hmm... unless I'm playing draft, where there is limited removal, I'd probably only pump him to level 2.
A 6/6 is nothing to sneeze at.
