Being bummed this has defender in its initial state is just stupid.

It's already a ridiculous stretch that an egg is blocking people. Now you want it grabbing swords and shit and running around?

Rather then something hatching out I like to think of it as mom coming down to take revenge on you for messing with her egg. I also love that the token looks like a chicken

"Dies" is an official rules word now?

Edit: I don't actually mind the "dies" wording; it saves a lot of space on the card. I was just surprised to see it.

Although you know there are going to be some folks who don't understand it now and think it triggers on exile.

I'm also not a fan of the "dies" wording. I would love it if they just brought back Buried.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the "dies" wording either.

I like it. Your' paying 3CMC for two creatures, a stout defender an above-curve flier.

Yeah, they really dropped the ball when it came to giving this guy Defender. The point of a 0/3 being able to attack is that you can slap on an equipment and either make a decent threat, force a trade or draw removal. Then, you gain a creature. When your deck isn't very fast, this kind of cat and mouse is a very viable tactic against control.

And I don't get this kind of power draw-down in light of the fact that they just printed Tuktuk the Explorerto replace Rukh Egg. None of these cards were ever played widely in constructed, so where was the need for the backpedal?

While I do like the idea of a less powerful Rukh Egg in white, I think R&D missed the mark here by giving this thing Defender. A 0/3 for 3 CMC turned into a 3/3 on death would have been appropriate, but making the 0/3 unable to attack cheapens it significantly if you ask me.

Yes, it's kind of silly to imagine an egg dramatically rolling into battle as an attacker, but is it any less ridiculous to imagine it doing the same thing on the defending side?

@Lash of Dragonbreath: It's very effective if you have instant-speed pump spells in hand, or at least your opponent thinks you might. Your opponent winds up with two choices: block the egg and kill it, generating a 3/3 flyer, or don't block it and potentially wind up taking massive damage when the egg is Giant Growthed or something. At least, that's how we used to do it with Rukh Eggs back in the day.

The problem is, that there's pretty much no reason to ever block the egg, yyukichigai. In most situations you'd actually rather your opponent waste his Giant Growth to do 3 damage - if he uses his Giant Growth like that, that's a GOOD thing for you unless you're very close to death. If you do block it then, you know, your opponent can just Giant Growth anyways and eat whatever is blocking short of a fatty. And if you block it and they don't use the Giant Growth but still have it in hand, then you're going to have to deal with a 3/3 flier backed by a pump spell instead of a 0/3 ground attacker.

You can bring it back with Sun Titan, which makes it better than Rukh Egg all on it's own. I think my favorite use for it is in a Heartless Summoning deck.
