Oddly enough, they could've used Bloodflow Connoisseur and it would be oddly equal in power.
The difference between a 2/2 and a 1/1 can be entirely vital (Saving this from Infest can mean the difference of one or two other creatures), not important at all. That being said, you now have to deal with getting all three colours of you deck out to play this. Bloodflow only needs one black mana.
So if you've found this to be your saving grace in your deck, consider Bloodflow as well. I myself haven't yet found a time when I sac a creature to Thrinax than one of the other better sac engines, like Tooth and Claw or Prossh.
