Not exactly. You could put it on an opponents creature and YOU would gain the life not the creatures controller. It can be used to negate the life loss of it attacking you, making it a pseudo-pacifism.

Pretty neat how flexible this could be. Def. worth considering for a "stop creature from dealing damage" effect in modern.
