@Schlappi: Lore Broker & Urza's Guilt don't work the same way that Bloodletter Quill, because with those cards you draw and discard at the same time (at the resolution of the spell/ability), instead with bloodletter you put the counter when you play the ability, then you lose life when the ability resolves.

Very nice card. I used it in a deck with Power Conduit and Chisei, Heart of Oceans, and worked very well!

This appears to be the Blood Quill Harry Potter was forced to use, which in turn seemed to derive from a torture and execution device from the short story "In the Penal Colony" by Kafka.

you can.
play the draw ability, then in response activate the second one. this will remove the counter you had to activate for drawing the card, afterwards the first abiility resolves without any counters on it, and you'll stay unharmed.

this card works also nicely with Power Conduit. draw a card each turn for {{2}} and pump up your creatures - or whatever artifacts you have.

Phyrexian Arena? Ok, so maybe there's fewer combos, but its also less of a liability.

Thx Mode!

Interesting idea, the Power Conduit thing. I just knew the card but don't own it, but still...very interesting! ;-)

So the same goes for things like Lore Broker or Urza's Guilt? You can still play the cards you draw before you discard, right (actually I know this, there's just someone who needs to see written proof^^)

Best regards from Hamburg

It would have been great in EDH except that it contains those blue and black mana symbols in the text box. Red and white are really starved for solid repeatable draw effects, and Bloodletter Quill's relatively cheap casting and activation costs would make it a much more appealing alternative to many artifacts that make you feel kinda bad for using them (Jayemdae Tome, Candles of Leng, Book of Rass, Tower of Fortunes, ect). These cards show up in decks from time to time, but I'm sure they'd be replaced with Bloodletter Quill if they were able to do so.

But blue and black are not so limited in there card advantage engines, and never need to bother with the dregs of the artifact tomes. Why would a blue & black deck ever play the Quill over Necropotence or Phyrexian Arena? Limiting the card to colors with better alternatives killed it.

Damn that black mana symbol! Chisei, Heart of Oceans wants it for her EDH deck!
