Why do some people think this costs 5?

Gabriel422 is exactly right - this was a dangerous creature to have in slower control decks due to its ability to regenerate from lots of "destroy" and damage removal like Mortify and Lightning Helix, while still leaving bats behind even if it did die. Also, it's three creatures for one card, which feeds Dread Return and sets you up for some spectacular plays, forcing an opponent to pick their poison.

Also, as Spectral Procession and Bitterblossom, among other cards, have taught us - giving flying tokens can win games by themselves. Do not underestimate the constant threat of having something in the air to pinprick you or block every turn. In decks rich in instants and countermagic, this is even better because you can wait to see what your opponent does with lands untapped, and then on their end step, if you didn't spend that mana, you could then activate the sacrifice and make ... For a while this was the best finisher Standard control decks had, and so the Vampire appeared in numerous control decks. This really illustrates how control decks work; it's not about how efficient your threats are, but about getting to a vastly superior state in terms of card advantage; at which point a single finisher (in theory; in practice they play manlands or play slightly more than one threat to avoid corner cases) will win you the game.

Why is he drinking blood? He needs milk to keep the bones strong, bloods are just not going to do it. He should start drinking more healthy.

The cost for creating another bat is kinda high, but that prevents you from making like 50 of them in one turn without having tons of mana.

You can also sacrifice stuff like blind hunter should the need arise.

Not that bad. For 5 mana you get a total of 5 power with evasion, a 3/3 guy that can regenerate without you having to leave mana open, and the ability to create more bats (which combos nicely with stuff that triggers on your creatures dying).
