Although Morphling is still a VERY good creature, is non-existence in the Top 8, let alone Top 16, of any big Legacy tournaments for several years now pretty much shows that his time has passed by (or he is waiting for the right card/combo/deck to fit into. Not even MUC really uses him successfully, so that being said, yes, Morphling WAS Superman, but Superman, ladies and gentlemen, has at last finally been Surpassed.
....And just like Juzam Djinn and the original printings of Serra Angel, his buy price will always remain high because of nostalgic/still-pretty-good-creature/way-awesome-art reasons.

Alot of people overestimate this due to it's reputation, and alot of people underestimate it because it doesn't go 'boom' like you would expect a card nicknamed 'superman' to. It is an excellent card, you just need to take your time, give him the TLC and he bring home the wins.

Today's power levels have caught up to and exceeded this guy. I don't even see people play him in commander games on MTGO. A combination of M10 combat damage rulings and subsequent highly playable finishers for blue decks have taken down what was once a nightmare to play against.
Mono-U control is nearly an impossible build in standard right now, when once it ruled the format. But U/X Aggro Control is very strong, with cards like Delver of Secrets giving them the business much quicker than Morphling ever could. Planeswalkers represent the new standard of finisher for control decks that Morphling once represented.

In the land of combat damage on the stack, Morphling is king!
During it's reign in standard Morphling was the gold standard of creature cards. Morphling's accelerated blue deck was bananas, turn two grim monolith followed by turn three Morphling with a blue mana up to protect it was too fun (the memories bring tears to my eyes) (damn I'm getting old cause I was playing standard back then).
