@metalevolence: Actually, in Alpha, green got better flying than black or red. Compare Scryb Sprites to Goblin Balloon Brigade (the latter also being an uncommon) or...black gets Will o' the Wisp at rare, so yeah. If anything, ***atrice here is why green doesn't get flying, because you'd want to put Lure on this guy, but an evasion ability ruins that synergy. Granted, these days it's "target creature must block this turn if able" (which is stupid and, near the end of the game, tautological) more than "all creatures block enchanted creature if able".

By the way, I'm sure he goes well with Roo***er Thief, filter people. Can't we be like the 4chan filters and make the message funny? Like change "seven" to "over nine thousand" or "a meme" to "stupid" and "not a meme" to "really stupid"?

Seriously, people, you don't need to self-censor Cockatrice. I'm all for being respectful and civil, and the kindness and maturity of the Gatherer community overall is awesome, but for fuck's sake it's not like 'homogenous' is an offensive word just because it contains the prefix homo-.

Alternatively, if Gatherer is auto-censoring you, verify that you're using the latest version and uncheck each "Parental Controls" option under Settings.

Oh god, people are so ignorant of mythology around here, surprisingly enough. Let me clarify some things:

1. ***atrices are NOT birds or reptiles or any combination between the two. They are fantastical monsters with only superficial resemblances to real animals, and they have the same roots as and are practically indistinguishable from "basilisks" in mythology, basically being two different names for the same monster.

2. The ***atrice or basilisk or whatever one would call it did indeed kill with their gaze, and sometimes possessed toxic breath. It was a popular point in tales about them that the hero killed them by presenting them with a mirror.

3. Gorgons, on the other hand, are much older and basically unrelated monsters that turned people to stone by being so ugly and monstrous that creatures literally would die from seeing them.

Hope that cleared some things up.

Finally getting a new Cockatrice in M14, but... it looks pretty bleak.

Deathgaze Cockatrice
2BlackBlack
Creature — Cockatrice
Flying, deathtouch
2/2

Strictly worse in three ways to Vampire Nighthawk. What a shame.

It's a ***atrice because ***atrices and basilisks are traditionally different. Similar ability, different creature. Shivan Dragon has built-in firebreathing and so does Wall of Fire. Should Wall of Fire's type be Dragon?
