If all you do is prevent damage to player with this, you are using it wrong.
The way to use it is after declaring your blockers and drawing his buffing instants. You gang up on a couple of critters and let others through. Unlike Fog, this one let's you still do your damage to his creatures, so he wastes his pumps, doesn't hit your life total, and loses a couple of creatures. That is a lot of swing for 1 mana.
Sure sideboard it to see his colors first, but it is a strong instant when those are his colors. If you main-deck safe passage or fog, this is superior against the right opponents.

This can not prevent a card like Deathmark from taking effect since Deathmark destroys creatures, and destroy effects don't deal damage.
If this gave your creatures protection from black then Deathmark could not be used to target your creatures.

That may or may not be true, but regardless, I don't think that the Gatherer was intended as a place to ask rules questions. Also, the difference between damage and destroy effects isn't really that difficult to grasp.

yes, because deathmark is damage.

@ hunthell - While those colors could probably do as much damage the next turn (if they have the spells), it could give you the last little push you need to finish them off or draw into a spell to keep you alive another turn.
