I believe its ability, rather than being "(U): Deeptread Merfolk gains islandwalk until end of turn.", should instead have been "(U): Target Merfolk gains islandwalk until end of turn.". It would have made this card slightly better and more useful in a tribal Merfolk deck, thus tying it in with the blocks theme, while still being quite balanced, I think. And it also makes sense from a thematic point of view, as the Deeptread Merrow could, with his expertise at the arts of diving and navigating, help out the significantly beefier Veteran of the Depths sneak up on the unsuspecting planeswalker.
