True, on the other hand thats a 5/3 sojourner, in naya that means it can also gain first strike, vigilance, indestructibility, regeneration, and etc. Then even if it dies you make one of your creatures somewhat stronger. If you play with crystallization, you can use the 1/1 counter to exile the creature its pacifying. On jund, the counter can also give benefits to creatures, like improving the amount of saprolings a mycoloth can create on upkeep. For ravnica, the counter can be used to activate simic cards.

Naya Sojourners 2Green
Instant
Naya Sojourners can't be countered by spells or abilities.

Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.
Draw a card.

We have Aggressive Urge, Instill Infection, and various strictly-better Battlegrowths, but still no cantrip instant +1/+1 counter.

Dang, would have been rewriting the Sojourners cycle to "When ~ is put into a graveyard, you may have it deal 1 damage to target creature or player." been so difficult?
This wouldn't have been gamebreaking either with that shortened text. Of course there is still a notable difference since it triggered from any discard effect this way.
But it could have been an interesting addition to madness decks then.

On constructed: None of the cards in this cycle as very good, and this, while one of the better ones, clearly never broke out into standard. No surprise there.
On limited: It all depends on what colors you're going. The great part about this cycle is that they work even if you're without their other colors. Nothing game-breaking, though.
Miscellaneous: They randomly made this promo, y'know.

I find it amusing that the elf shaman is stronger than the zombie ogre card. I mean, it's got the same power as wooly thoctar, for crying out loud!
