I used to be content reading Gatherer card reviews, never having seen the need to sign up as a member to actually rate and comment on cards. Not when there are already tons of experts out there giving all the valuable input there could possibly be.

Until I saw the comments of people comparing this card to Blaze. And I knew that as a responsible MTG player, I couldn't just sit there and do nothing. So i signed up for a Wizards account at long last, after seven years of passive reading, just so i could say this:

Blaze is a sorcery.

Blaze,
it's a sorcery.

Staggershock, Flame Slash, Forked Bolt. IMO Red made out like a bandit in Rise, because the cards were good for the classic strategy: kill them in the face. Much of zendikar block asked players to make up new decks to accomodate the cards, which is good for the overall game, but sometimes I just want to see White Weenie, Black Graveyard, Red Burn, Green AGGRO Elves/Monsters (NOT Combo), and Blue...well Blue can just go f*k itself, but the others are cool.

Heat Ray is a card whose inclusion in this set is designed for Limited. Of course its not Contructed good. The point is, having this show up at common in packs meant that yes, in fact, there WAS something you could do about an Eldrazi other than pray you open the Rare/Mythic X-spell you might actually use in a Constructed deck. There were plenty of targets that this card was happy to answer. a few Kozileks even bit it where I played. The funny thing about an Eldrazi is it takes a while to conjure. long enough to build up the mana t... (see all)

Stop comparing xr burn spells to blaze.
Fireball is the poster child of xr burn spells.

I love Blaze for being able to target players, but this has the nice perk of being instant.

@gorgoncube

I understand your feeling, but this particular standard is where blue players could easily tap themselves out on turn four for Jace and Everflowing Chalice, and still manage to survive. Wizards gave us powercreep and people forgot what it's like to play strategically, thus the difference between sorcery and instant were lost.

X spells are rather useless if you cant target players. making it an instant is a small condolence of loosing the primary function of x burn. If a creature is large enough that normal burn spells wont cut it, this wont ether, as you wont have the mana for it.

The only thing it has over Flame Slash is instant speed.... that's it.
They do the same amount of damage, 4, if this pays 5 mana whilst Flame Slash only pays 1.
Only once you get into huge numbers does it become better than Flame Slash..... and what are you trying to kill that's so big anyway? An Eldrazi? Good luck tapping out ALL your mana to get rid of one creature.

It's not cheap, but it's not exactly crap. Combine with Lava Axe or Quenchable Fire.
