Coming in tapped without any counters really hurts these guys. If just tapping for R without putting a counter on first were an option (which could be balanced with their etb tapped clause) then these guys might see more than niche use in proliferate and X spell based decks. Rosheen Meanderer appreciates them anyways.

This is part of a cycle of "storage lands" from Fallen Empires which are all plagued by their slow, slow speed. At a time when land destruction was so rampant and cheap, this could easily set you back very very far. To give you some idea of how slow these lands are, note that they all enter the battlefield tapped, and then require you to tap to remove counters. To get more benefit than a simple Mountain, you'd need to invest 4(!) turns. Compare this to Dwarven Ruins, and that cycle of lands, from the same set, which provide a little optional burst after they come into play tapped.

This is an extremely slow land, and red does not typically benefit from games that go the distance. It does, however, allow for you to store up lots of mana for a giant Fireball or Disintegrate, but the math involved makes it quite a stretch. Also, it's a good thing there wasn't much of a limited scene during thi... (see all)

The problem with lands like this and their potential combinations with Doubling Season / Gilder Bairn or Proliferate is that you still have to spend mana to get mana. Usually, getting a net gain isn't worth it unless you have an Variable Colorless cost worth paying.

But if you're patient, I suppose it wouldn't be bad.

Save for a large X-burn spell in a deck where most cards have costs of between 1 and 3. Red's not heavy on card-drawing, so you should be top-decking fairly quickly.

Decent card if for no other reason than it doesn't require any input (other than leaving it tapped) to charge it up.
